In the day of leash laws & invisible fences, I can't think of all the trouble I'd been in if left to roam. I'd get lost, get run over, get into it with some animal who'd chew me up.. probably all within the first hour if I ever did venture away from mom's side. He was left in the back yard most of the time but got to come inside at night. Mom's parents said that was enough, that he would be safe (he was vetted adn neutered).
One day some very cruel boys got angry at the dogs who would bark at them when they rode their bikes through the yard. The put some rat poison in some meat and fed it to the dog that came to the fence, which was Lucky, a very friendly dog.
Mom;s parents brought Lucky in to the vet she worked at and he was bleeding internally. It took 2 weeks of constant critical care to get him healthy and he was never 100% again.
Since then Mom and my grandparents never let dogs outside if they can't watch them. Do we get time outside? Yep tons. We are just so much safer than being left out there alone.
Hugs and Tail Wags,
DixieAshley The CRPS Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02445209068969534291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834648051403267276.post-62914047576701580522009-10-19T11:56:14.343-05:002009-10-19T11:56:14.343-05:00Oh no, that's just too sad and heartbreaking. ...Oh no, that's just too sad and heartbreaking. This is so sad, the things that people are capable of. Attitudes about dogs have changed a lot in this country, haven't they? For the most part, dogs have a higher 'social status' these days, thankfully. We love to imagine a world where all pets are loved and cared for, and treated with respect.

Luv,
CloudCloud the Wonder Doghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02032896042180176912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834648051403267276.post-77634762230484360912009-10-19T09:15:26.823-05:002009-10-19T09:15:26.823-05:00Oh, oh, very sad indeed. Dogs are treated so much differently now... she does wonder if the humans have gone too far the other way though. One thing she really questions is the fact that many shelters won't let people adopt if they don't plan to keep the animal indoors. As long as they have a safe place (fenced yard) dogs should do fine outside... they're DOGS! It bothers us that so many of them are cooped up in houses now, some for 10-12 hrs while owners are at work. That doesn't sound like a great life for a dog, does it?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
